A non-company-sponsored social gathering is to blame for two separate shutdowns and 21 COVID-19 cases at a Greer plastics company, according to a company spokesperson.
Based on positive COVID-19 cases, Alltrista Plastics LLC shut down production on Aug. 24, and again on Sept. 3, to conduct thorough sanitization of the facility after learning of COVID-19 outbreaks, according to Morgan Fields, a communications manager for Jadex, Inc., which operates Alltrista.
Fields responded to questions in an email after The Greenville News had received allegations. The News reported on an initial COVID-19 outbreak allegation earlier this week but specifics about the shutdown was unclear.
The company identified 21 COVID-19 cases among its employees, which led to the temporary shutdowns and extensive cleanings, Fields said.
Contact tracing was done to determine that "a significant number of the cases can all be tied to a single non-company sponsored social gathering by several employees," Fields said in an email.
All potentially exposed employees are in quarantine and will remain so for the duration recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Fields said.
The Greer facility has 152 employees. The 21 cases were confirmed over the past two weeks. Alltrista's senior leadership was on site during the week of Aug. 31 to ensure that the facility was abiding by CDC, state and local government guidelines, Fields said.
"The safety and health of our employees is paramount. We will continue to practice our proactive steps to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 including temperature taking, required mask guidelines, and an expanded cleaning regimen," Fields said in the email.
The Sept. 3 facility shutdown came a day after a Prisma Health System physician urged the public to avoid large social gatherings on Labor Day weekend to prevent additional spreads of COVID-19.
