Accepting a scholarship at the University of Maryland allowed Dewey to excel academically and athletically, while also leaving her the opportunity to build lifelong relationships, both personally and professionally.
Dewey’s softball career enabled her to see the world as she spent time playing professional ball in Germany after she earned her degree in Economics from Maryland. In Germany, she captured the country’s national championship before returning to the states.
Aside from the incredibly strong bonds formed with her teammates, Dewey also grew connections inside the athletics department which ultimately sparked her interest in working in the sports industry. She was elected as the SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) president as a senior. This led to her first career opportunity as a compliance intern with the Maryland Athletics department. She then went on to an internship with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at their Government Relations office in Washington, D.C.
While working in D.C., Dewey met her mentor, Tom McMillen, a men’s basketball All-American for the Terps in the 1970s and who served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987-93.
“Tom has helped me navigate not only the industry but my career as well,” said Dewey.
Currently, McMillen holds the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of the LEAD1 Association, which is where Dewey has worked ever since graduating from Maryland in 2017.
LEAD1 represents the athletics directors and programs of the 130 member universities of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). This organization works to influence how the rules of college sports are enacted and implemented, advocate for the future of college athletics, and provide various services to our member schools.
Dewey began as a consultant with LEAD1 in June 2017, before being promoted to the Director of Special Projects & Research in January 2018 and her current role as Director of Business Operations & Development in September 2019. Dewey spearheads all business operations that support the LEAD1 mission, including external business relationships, content creation and curating all brand marketing and visual content. She also leads a number of major projects, including the Institute, the Annual Member Meetings and the Annual Compensation Survey.
“The reason I have the job and the connections I do are solely because of Maryland Athletics,” Dewey said.
