Disneyland Opens Gates To Non-California Residents Today And The Impact May Be Felt Immediately - Forbes

The Disneyland Resort has been open for California residents to enjoy since April 30. Since the reopening, locals have enjoyed shorter than average wait times, a virtually empty theme park, and the ability to explore the all new Avengers Campus without the overwhelming amount of tourists that travel to Disneyland every year.

Now that travel and tourism have started to pick up thanks to the ongoing campaign of getting vaccines into people’s arms, Disneyland is set to welcome travelers from around the world. It’s likely that the Disneyland Resort will feel the impact of more travelers instantly with on-site hotel rooms booking up faster than before, and with dining reservations being scooped up by incoming visitors. The trickle-down effect will not only impact smaller operations like outdoor snack carts at Disneyland but also the hotels and restaurants that are outside of the gates of the resort.

As Disneyland gets ready to open the tourism flood gates it’s guaranteed that local businesses are also getting ready for the influx of families traveling this summer to see Avengers Campus and revisit Walt Disney’s original park. The hotels and restaurants that call Anaheim, California home rely on a steady stream of tourists that flock to the Disneyland Resort every year to fill the thousands of rooms and dining room tables across the city. Without guests at Disneyland the hotels and restaurants, many of which are locally owned, struggled to get through the pandemic without having to close for good.

California is also set to drop its statewide mask mandate today, which makes travel more enticing to people who are looking for a place where masks are not a requirement. The Disneyland Resort has already stated that masks will not be required for visitors who are fully vaccinated unless they are on the bus transportation system. While most coronavirus restrictions are being lifted like mask wearing and social distancing starting today, guests will still notice the impact of the pandemic with some dining locations still being closed, and attractions skipping some pre-shows. The ability to skip pre-shows has allowed guests to get on more attractions during the day, but it also has them spending more money on merchandise and food since they are not in a line somewhere for a ride.

The fact that the Disneyland Resort is opening to non-California residents for the first time since reopening in April is a big deal. Disneyland is often thought of as a beacon for the travel and tourism industry, and has only closed four times in its decades long history. The first closure was during the national day of mourning after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, then during the Northridge earthquake. The third closure was after the attacks on 9/11, and the fourth was at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The reopening of Disneyland in April and now to out-of-state travelers virtually signals the reopening of America as people began to plan their summer vacations.
