Purdue is in no shortage of underclassmen on this roster.
In fact, there appear to be few seniors in comparison.
I have dug through the roster and I have chosen 5 freshmen that I believe will make an impact. These are players on the roster for incoming freshmen, redshirt freshmen or sophomores.
No juniors, seniors or fifth year players will be included.
- Anthony Rompf - Redshirt Freshman, 6’, 190 Pounds, Cornerback - Purdue is short at cornerback, there is no denying that. After losing a couple to the transfer portal, Purdue is essentially down to Cory Trice and often criticized Dedrick Mackey that have playing experience on Saturdays. Enter Anthony, who I believe could outright win the 2nd cornerback spot over Dedrick, a fifth year senior. Rompf is a little bit shorter than what Purdue has played at corner in years past, but he is an explosive athlete that could make an impact.
- Marcellus Moore - Redshirt Freshman, 5-8, 175 Pounds, WR/RB/KR - Marcellus Moore is one of the fastest players in the entire country. It is time to get him involved, somehow. While small in stature, his speed needs to get him on the field, even if it is with a few set plays each game as a gadget player. I would love to see him come out of the backfield, play the slot and return kicks, but I mostly want to see this man deep on kick returns and set us up with great field position.
- T.J. Sheffield - Sophomore, 5-11, 190 Pounds, Slot Receiver - T.J. will be a return man as well, as he was last year. But I see him seizing the slot receiver position left wide open by the departure of Rondale Moore. He will need to mostly beat out the sure handed Jackson Anthrop for the slot, but he has the ability to do so. He was once a Notre Dame Commit - I would love to see him put up big numbers against them this season.
- Gus Hartwig - Sophomore, 6-5, 310 Pounds, Center - A pure no brainer for this list is Gus Hartwig. Gus is the best offensive lineman Purdue has had in a decade. He was fantastic last year as a true freshman playing center. Look for him to make a jump this year and command the Line of Scrimmage. He should be a draft pick in a year or two.
- Marvin Grant - Sophomore, 6-2, 210 Pounds, Safety - Grant is a guy that has fought injuries his entire career at Purdue. I tabbed him a few years back as a day 1 starter as a freshman. As long as he is healthy, I still believe in that. He should be penciled in at strong safety, with running mate Cam Allen at Free Safety. That is a pretty solid duo on the back part of the defense.
