Sonitrol of Butler County and its non-Sonitrol company Southwestern Ohio Security have been acquired by Montgomery County-based Sonitrol of SW Ohio.
The company provides verification systems used by local police departments to minimize false alarms and reduce emergency response times.
The move helps Dayton area company of 70 employees, one of the largest security firms in the region, secure more than 1,500 commercial and residential accounts from the Butler County company’s location in Hamilton, which will remain open. It also retains Sonitrol of Butler County President Mike Pope and the existing staff of seven there and provides all customers local service and monitoring.
“We are now able to assume the franchise and sell in Butler County, which is growing tremendously,” said Alison Shiver, residential sales and marketing manager. “Most importantly, all of Butler County’s accounts will be monitored here locally in Springboro.”
Sonitrol of SW Ohio, which operates independent franchise Shiver Security Systems, serves the Greater Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus and Northern Kentucky areas.
Chip Shiver, president of both the company and its franchise, said Sonitrol’s technology, local monitoring station and “ever-important” partnership with local police are key factors in the firm’s continued growth.
“It’s always about people and we believe we have the very best talent in the region when it comes to professional security,” Shiver said. “Combining two organizations with a very similar footprint in relatively the same market makes this acquisition very exciting for us. Simply put, we are merging two longtime Sonitrol families, which creates additional market penetration for the organization.”
There is much history between the two companies. Chip Shiver’s father, Rex Shiver, sold the Butler County franchise of Sonitrol to Mike Pope’s father, Jim, in 1971. Both companies officially launched that year. Mike Pope stepped in to take over for his father at Sonitrol of Butler County several years ago.
Company officials declined to provide a specific amount for the July 6 acquisition, saying the company is a private, closely held, family-owned and operated firm that never publicly discloses financial matters.
Officials said the expansion is reflective of the company’s ongoing commitment to local and surrounding communities and a market need in both the residential and commercial security sectors.Strategically, the acquisition affords consolidation, uniform local monitoring from their Central Station and will establish additional market penetration in Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky.
Mike Pope said the merger will provide Sonitrol clients with an increased number of technicians to provide an even better level of service.
“Many of our family members over the decades have been a part of our organization,” Pope said. “Our dedicated and professional staff, who has been dependable and loyal for 48 years, are family, too. Rex Shiver and Jim Pope built the foundation for both companies. I am sure that Rex and Jim are looking down and saying, ‘Congratulations, sons.’”
