The city of Surprise is exploring new ways for developers to help pay for transportation projects to accommodate future development.
City officials are launching a transportation impact fee study, which will determine the one-time fees charged to new development.
Implementing a transportation impact fee would help to ensure adequate transportation infrastructure as the city grows.
Through the transportation impact fee study, the city will be able to determine recommended transportation improvements for future growth, the cost of improvements associated with growth, draft impact fees and a draft ordinance.
It also will help to define what infrastructure should be included — whether that is street construction, land acquisition for future street alignments, drainage or other transportation-related costs.
The city will work closely with a stakeholder group comprised of the development community, the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council for discussion and revision throughout the process.
Draft documents will also be posted publically to the city’s website for public review and comment.
The study is expected to last 10 months, with formal drafts for discussion and final revisions produced sometime after January and potential consideration and action by City Council on a transportation impact fee ordinance and related fees in June 2021.
The first public outreach meeting is Thursday, Sept. 24.
The meeting will be conducted electronically using a computer interface program known as WebEx. By using a computer or phone and the access information provided below, any member of the public may participate.
This will be a basic introduction on what a transportation development impact fee may encompass and the process for its creation and implementation.
