NEW YORK  –  The BIG EAST Conference has announced a two-year partnership with Team IMPACT, a nonprofit organization that matches children with serious chronic illnesses with collegiate athletic teams. The partnership will begin in the 2021-22 academic year and will continue through 2022-23, with the goal of further establishing a long-term relationship.

The partnership was formed around the shared core values and mission: promoting empathy,
resilience, camaraderie, and excellence, while providing a student-athlete development experience focused on the whole person.

As community engagement partners, the BIG EAST will establish Team IMPACT as a consistent Student-Athlete Advisory Committee agenda item for discussion at Conference SAAC meetings. Team IMPACT will provide family content opportunities for President, Athletic Director, SWA, SAAC and other BIG EAST constituencies.

"The BIG EAST is excited to be joining forces with Team IMPACT and looks forward to continuing to expand the well-established tradition of student-athletes contributing to something far greater than themselves," said Katie Willett, BIG EAST Senior Associate Commissioner for Governance, Compliance and Student-Athlete Development/SWA and member of the Team IMPACT Advisory Board. "All 11 BIG EAST institutions recognize the power of team, a core principle that Team IMPACT was built upon, and are committed to working with Team IMPACT to enhance the lives of courageous children.  The great work that Team IMPACT has done and continues to do aligns perfectly with the BIG EAST Serves platform and mission of our institutions."

"A partnership with the BIG EAST strengthens the longstanding history that Team IMPACT has with almost every member institution and celebrates the commitment that we have made to come together and change the lives of so many courageous kids and families in the BIG EAST community," said National Program Director Amy VanRyn.  "I'm incredibly impressed by how the Conference, the schools, coaches, and student athletes have embraced our mission.  We are excited about the future and look forward to continuing to build an even stronger partnership with the BIG EAST while also setting an example for conferences and schools across the country."

The BIG EAST will champion Team IMPACT at the campus, conference and national levels. The Conference will promote Team IMPACT to its membership with the goal of maintaining and increasing its current level of Team IMPACT participation, establishing a match on every BIG EAST Campus.

Currently, the BIG EAST has a member of Team IMPACT on 28 active teams.

Villanova Vice President and Director of Athletics Mark Jackson was selected to lead the national Athletic Advisory Board for Team IMPACT. The volunteer Athletic Advisory Board is made up of a diverse group of coaching and administrative professionals whose expertise is instrumental in ensuring that Team IMPACT supports the unique needs of the student-athletes and coaches who participate with the organization. In his role leading this group, Jackson will help build the Advisory Board into an integral part of the Team IMPACT infrastructure.

Along with Jackson and Willett, Lee Reed, Director of Athletics for Georgetown University will also serve on the Team IMPACT Advisory Board.

One of the founding members of Team IMPACT is Mark Plansky, a Villanova alum and 1985 basketball national champion. Plansky was the 1988 BIG EAST Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He currently sits on the Team IMPACT's Board of Directors.

About Team IMPACT: Team IMPACT is the only U.S. nonprofit that tackles the emotional trauma and social isolation experienced by children facing serious and chronic illnesses by matching them with a college athletic team. The two-year therapeutic program complements a child's medical treatments, allowing the child to develop relationships and skills that help them complete the full circle of healing. Because no child should be sidelines by sickness.

Through participation in Team IMPACT's clinically informed program, children experience a true sense of belonging, resulting in increased empowerment, normalization, health promotion and resilience. Families feel connected and supported as their child achieves individualized goals, while experiencing the joy of team camaraderie and inclusion; and student-athletes gain perspective and inspiration, as well as lessons in adversity and resilience.

Founded in 2011, Team IMPACT has matched more than 2,100 children with 700+ colleges and universities in 49 states, positively impacting more than 60,000 student-athletes. If you know a child or team who may be interested, please visit www.teamimpact.org.
