The Montreal Impact declined the 2021 contract option for Bojan, but that doesn't mean the attacker definitely won't be back next year.
Impact sporting director Olivier Renard revealed that the Impact made a new offer for the former Barcelona man after declining his contract option and said the ball is now in the player's court regarding whether he'll be back with the Impact next season.
“We need to check the quality, price and age [when making the decisions]," Renard told media on a virtual press conference. "We know he’s a great player but the option was too high for us, so that’s why the club took the decision not to make this option. We have interest to bring Bojan back ... the decision will be on him.”
Bojan, 30, joined the Impact last summer and made 25 appearances, adding seven goals and two assists. The creative attacker is a former teammate of head coach Thierry Henry at the Camp Nou and Bojan has spoken often about how important his relationship with Henry was for him at the beginning of his career.
Meanwhile, Renard said that club captain Jukka Raitala will not be back after his contract expired. The Finnish international made 69 appearances with the club.
Montreal are in the awkward spot of being eliminated from the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs but their season not being over as they remain alive in the Concacaf Champions League, which gets back underway in mid-December.
The Impact resume with a 2-1 deficit against Honduran club Olimpia.
