A free turkey give-away on San Pedro’s waterfront Friday morning, Nov. 20, all began with a bit of chaos, a traffic jam and more than 100 overwhelmed law enforcement officers trying, on the fly, to find a logistical solution to the unexpected response.
The Battleship Iowa served as the backdrop for the distribution of 2,000 18-pound Butterball turkeys by the CMA CGM group, a leading shipping and logistics company, which partnered with the Port of Los Angeles to stage the event. Los Angeles Police Department and Port Police officers were on hand to assist.
Families in need, an advance media advisory said, could “safely pick up free turkeys via drive-thru in San Pedro.” It was all part of the company’s ongoing Thanksgiving initiative to feed more than 35,000 Americans across the nation amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Not specified in the release, however, was that the recipient families were pre-selected through a process conducted with several social service agencies and had appointments.
But then a local television station went on the air in the early morning hours Friday to announce that 2,000 turkeys would simply be given away, and the result was a long line of cars on Harbor Boulevard seeking to get in at the Iowa parking lot entrance.
The crowds were quickly moved through, however, and those who showed up with no reservation were able to provide their contact information. Because there were some no-shows from the formal list, many people who showed up without reservations received turkeys afterwards, according to the Port of Los Angeles.
The company’s Thanksgiving initiative will provide 10,000 donated turkeys for distribution in Lake Charles, Louisiana; Houston; Nashville; and Norfolk, Virginia, along with Los Angeles. Thousands of Thanksgiving meals also will be provided under the company umbrella.
“COVID-19 has fundamentally changed how all of us will experience Thanksgiving this year and while it remains an uncertain time, the CMA CGM Group is honored to help Los Angeles families celebrate this important holiday,” Ed Aldridge, president of CMA CGM America, said in a written statement. “We are particularly grateful to the Port of Los Angeles and Los Angeles Port Police who helped make distribution and delivery today possible.”
CMA CGM has 500 vessels that serve more than 420 ports across five continents. The company also has donated personal protective equipment to Los Angeles and to California farmworkers during the pandemic and recent wildfires.
On Thanksgiving, the company and the port will partner again to donate 300 meals to local homeless shelters in the Harbor Area. The meals will be hand-delivered by Los Angeles Port Police.
