WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — A national hotel development company recently acquired Holiday Inn Resort on Wrightsville Beach, and now plans on revamping the structure, originally built in 1999.
According to a press release, Holiday Inn Resort was the fifth acquisition in the past three years for OTO Development, which is based in Spartanburg, S.C.
In the release, the company boasts a track record of purchasing and re-purposing “existing assets in strong locations.”
“With a goal of maximizing a property’s potential, OTO Development has enhanced hotels through renovations and operational improvements,” the release said. “OTO recently transformed hotels in Key West and Marathon in the Florida Keys and has a current project under renovation in St. Pete Beach, FL.”
Holiday Inn Resort will undergo a “major refresh over the course of the next 12-18 months,” the release said. The upgrades will include “updating the lobby, restaurants, bars and event spaces,” and also boasting the look in the guest rooms, pools and other outdoor areas.
Holiday Inn Resort already includes three different pools, a sand volleyball court and a fitness facility, along with multiple dining areas.
Hank Miller, a member of the Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen, said he had no foreknowledge of the announcement, which was made Dec. 22, but added that he was aware the resort had been sold and thought it must have been on the back burner due to the ongoing pandemic.
“For decades, the Holiday Inn Wrightsville Beach has been a destination all its own for family beach vacations, picturesque weddings and relaxing, yet productive conferences,” said Corry Oakes, CEO of OTO Development, in the press release. “We are delighted to be a part of the next phase of this hotel’s history, along with the many memories that will be made here.”
Holiday Inn Resort is seven-stories tall and holds 184 rooms.
OTO Development is under the umbrella of The Johnson Group, and since its 2004 creation, has partnered with major hotel brands like Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott — with a portfolio of around 70 hotels either owned or operated by the company.
