Newport Beach, Calif. – Former Texas Football JACK Joseph Ossai was honored as a finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy during a virtual ceremony on Sunday evening.
The ceremony originated from The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, Calif., home to The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, which awards the trophy. FOX Sports announcer Joel Klatt served as the emcee and former USC and Los Angeles Rams coach John Robinson was the featured speaker. Six finalists were honored, including the winner, LB Paddy Fischer of Northwestern.
Ossai is the fifth Longhorn, and first since Emmanuel Acho in 2011, to be named a finalist for the award that was established in 2004. Sam Acho (2010), Brian Orakpo (2008) and Derrick Johnson (2004) are the others to be recognized as finalists for the honor.
The Lott IMPACT Trophy, named after Pro Football Hall of Fame member Ronnie Lott, is awarded to college football's Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year annually. IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.
Ossai earned selection from all five recognized All-America teams this year, collecting first-team honors from the Associated Press, Football Writers Association of American and WCFF, and second-team accolades from the American Football Coaches Association and Sporting News. Ossai's three first-team honors grant him consensus All-America standing, the 61st Longhorn to achieve that feat in school history.
In addition to being selected as a consensus first-team All-American and Lott IMPACT Trophy finalist, Ossai was also recognized as a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award and as a first-team All-Big 12 honoree this past season.
Ossai, a Conroe, Texas native, served as a team captain and started all nine games of the regular season for the Longhorns. In that time, he recorded 55 tackles, 16.0 tackles for loss – the most in the Big 12 and second-most nationally at the end of the regular season – five sacks, three forced fumbles, one recovery, two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries. Ossai recorded a tackle for loss in eight of nine games that he played in this season, including matching his career high with six TFLs in a road win over then-No. 6 Oklahoma State. That night, Ossai totaled 12 tackles, six tackle for loss, three sacks, forced a fumble and recovered one to help the Longhorns earn their first road win over a top-10 team since 2010. He sealed the win by sacking OSU quarterback Spencer Sanders on fourth down in overtime, and in doing so became the first Power Five player to recorded at least 12 tackles, six TFLs and three sacks in a game since Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh in the 2009 Big 12 Championship Game.
The Lott IMPACT Trophy is given to the player who exhibits the same characteristics that its namesake did during his distinguished career. Voters for the award include selected members of the national media, previous finalists, the Board of Directors of the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation and a distinguished group of former college football head coaches.
