A company that provides, food, patient transport and environmental services at Long Beach Medical Center has lost its contract and will lay off 362 workers next month, but most of the employees are expected to stay on with the new company.
In a recent Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice sent to the state Employment Development Department, Sodexo said it received notice that, effective July 1 the medical center will no longer use its services.
“Sodexo will close its operation at these facilities and the employment of individuals there by Sodexo will be discontinued,” the company said. “The client has informed us that Compass will be providing these services.”
The move will impact 146 environmental attendants, 20 cooks, 66 food-service workers, 31 environmental service workers, 19 patient transporters and a variety of other employees, including supervisors, clerks, HR specialists and operations managers.
In an email sent Friday, Sodexo spokeswoman Heidi Bullman said the displaced workers won’t be left hanging.
“All employees will be offered continued employment with Sodexo and the new vendor,” she said.
Ann Lee, vice president of ancillary support services at the medical center, said the facility completed a competitive bidding process for its nutrition, environmental services and patient transport services to ensure optimum patient care and opted to move from Sodexo to Compass.
“Compass offered employment opportunities to all employees and are pleased that the majority of the current staff are expected to continue in their same roles,” Lee said via email.
Sodexo staff who wish to remain will continue in their same roles with their current salaries and benefits, she said, adding that Compass is adding 60 additional positions.
