LEWISTON — A Colorado data and tech company is making Lewiston its new headquarters, moving 3,800 servers from different sites around the country and aiming to create 40 to 50 jobs by the end of the year.
Corporate Manager Bill Stewart said the company, Dynamics, was drawn here by the space, a workforce with call center experience and the cold.
“The machines generate heat, so in Maine, you have a good climate — half the year, it’s a temperature where you don’t have to have a secondary cooling system and, of course, the summers are beautiful here,” he said Thursday.
Dynamics has leased 30,533-square feet at 777 Main St. for its local operations, finding the site through Frank Carr at Maine Realty Advisors.
Stewart said the company, which provides data management and hosting, was founded in Colorado in 2009 and currently has servers in locations that include Georgia and Las Vegas.
Some customer’s needs stop at websites and some need layers of security and private servers. Stewart said he initially looked at the state after securing space inside a former naval building at Brunswick Landing.
That high-end security center “has eyeball retina scanners, bank vault doors, like something out of the movies,” he said. “We have 3,800 clients that we host across the nation. Since we got here in September, we’ve been migrating these servers. The Brunswick facility didn’t have the full capacity that we needed, although it has the security, so that’s what led us to Lewiston.”
Lewiston will be the headquarters for the sales, marketing and development departments, along with servers. Dynamics will also house some servers in Oxford.
“A lot of our company revolves around customer service, so we have a pretty strong incoming and outgoing sales department as well; we have people calling in, they might want a website,” Stewart said. Lewiston is a “hub of people who used to work in different call centers for different companies, so there’s a vast level of experience that we’ll be able to tap into the area eventually, good local talent. That’s one of the reasons we’re really excited about Lewiston. We have the servers running and maintain them for our customers, but we have to keep revenues coming in the door.”
He’s hoping to hire the first 25 employees by the end of the first quarter, a mix of sales staff and programmers.
Stewart said Dynamics works with all industries, though roughly 40% of clients are in construction and about 30% in retail operations.
“A lot of times we come in and we’re like the tech whisperer: ‘You can do this, you can do that, we’ll help you figure that out. This is what your bottleneck for your business is, let’s identify that,'” he said.
