STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- If you like candy and are older than the age of 5, a Canadian company wants to put you on its payroll, offering a pretty enticing $78,000 per year work-from-home sum. The job description? “Leading candy board meetings, being the head taste tester ... and all things fun.”
Candy Funhouse, an online retailer that hawks all kinds of confectionery treats -- from chocolate bars to gummies and licorice -- posted the sweet gig on LinkedIn in July, CNN Business reported. Several thousand candidates have since applied for the Chief Candy Officer position.
Jamal Hejazi, the company’s CEO, told the news outlet he was surprised by the number of “golden ticket” themed applications and elaborate videos of entire families offering to share the tasting duties and salary. But he said he sees the attraction.
“Imagine your best memories around candy, and having that every day at work,” he said.
Candy Funhouse, based outside of Toronto, is headed by a quartet of 20- and 30-something siblings who grew up in the area and whose parents owned donut shops and a local restaurant, CNN reported.
“My brother Mo, a candyhead, founded it in 2018, and my mother was employee no. 2,” Hejazi told the news agency, adding that he and a younger sister and brother later joined the firm.
The family’s goal was always to differentiate their company from big-name competitors like Mars, Hershey and Amazon with a “weird” mix of products and no minimum orders.
“We’ll sell one lollipop,” Hejazi told CNN about his company, which has a strong social presence and did extremely well during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, boasting sales just under $15 million.
According to the LinkedIn ad, the Chief Candy Officer position is open to applicants 5 and older, and although it’s a work-from-home opportunity, the lucky employee will have the option to work out of either the company’s Toronto, Canada, headquarters or the Newark, N.J., office.
The pay is listed at $100,000 annually in Canadian dollars, which breaks down to $78,000 in U.S. currency.
“Being the Chief Candy Officer at Candy Funhouse is much more than just fun and games, it’s serious candy business,” the ad says. “The candidate will be put through extensive palate training and much more. The Chief Candy Officer should put fun at the forefront of their daily routine.”
The LinkedIn ad notes that the applicant cannot have food allergies and will be responsible for taste testing 3,500+ products on a monthly basis. But Hejazi told CNN that number is incorrect and merely represents the different varieties the company stocks.
Otherwise “that would be 117 [pieces of candy] a day,” Hejazi said. “That’s too many.”
The company is currently prepping for Halloween and hopes to officially hire for this position by September, so the deadline for submitting an application is Aug. 31.
An extra added job incentive? The position comes with an extensive dental plan.
