If you’re looking for a new brand of coffee to try, this is just the story for you.

Based in Rome, Generous Roasting is a coffee company run primarily by volunteers and employees with intellectual and developmental disabilities as a way of gaining work experience.

Generous Roasting is owned by Haven Camps, which provides retreat opportunities for individuals with special needs.

“I’m glad to be a part of Generous Roasting. I think it’s a great thing. Everybody works together as a team,” said team member Austin Martin. “Who doesn’t want fresh roasted coffee that you can get in either holding or ground? We have coffee from all over the place."

Martin said he’s proud to work at the facility, not just because of the coffee, but also because of the opportunity the company provides him and several other volunteers and employees.

“I think it’s a great thing for the community to have people with intellectual and developmental disabilities all be able to come together and have a place to work where they feel comfortable and safe,” he said.

Generous Roasting offers both volunteer and paid positions for individuals with special needs, something operations manager Giana Meola said is needed in the area.

“It not only provides the community with a good quality product, but it also fills a gap that I feel Oneida County is lacking, which is providing employment and work experience to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities,“ Meola said.

They work as a team to roast, package and sell the coffee, gaining valuable work experience and team-building skills along the way.

“Teaching them how to label the bags, how to fill the bags, measuring, everything to fill a bag of coffee with lots of love, and we really take pride in what we do here,” Meola said.

Next time you see that coffee bag running low, instead of heading to the grocery store, Martin said he hopes you’ll stop by Generous Roasting.

“The money is going to a good cause. It’s going to help people that have disabilities. It’s going to functions like that. It’s gonna go to the Delta Camp. I hope that everybody’s able to stop by,” Martin said.

Proceeds from coffee sales go toward paying workers who are employees, as well as funding camp activities.
