Given that “Company” is in part an examination of social isolation, it’s ironic that COVID-related issues forced South Bay Musical Theatre to reschedule its production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical from earlier this year.
The show was set to open Sept. 24 and run through Oct. 15 at the Saratoga Civic Theater, 13777 Fruitvale Ave.
With music and lyrics by Sondheim and book by George Furth, “Company” is largely regarded as helping establish the modern musical, with characters given to self-examination through song. The original 1971 production won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics and Best Book.
The show has had four Broadway revivals; the last closed this summer after winning five Tonys.
“We are honored to present ‘Company’ as a tribute to Sondheim’s incredible influence and lasting legacy,” South Bay Musical Theatre Executive Director Sara K. Dean said in a statement. “‘Company’ was groundbreaking when it premiered in 1971, altering forever the traditional style of musical theater. While this production will feel like a time capsule back to the 1970s, the story is still relevant today, examining relationships in a society becoming increasingly isolated.”
South Bay Musical Theatre’s production is directed by Vinh G. Nguyen, with choreography by Michael Saenz, music direction by Joseph Kelly and vocal direction by Anita Carey.
Tickets for “Company” are $25-$55 at www.SouthBayMT.com or by calling 408-266-4734.
South Bay Musical Theatre has adopted new COVID safety measures: Patrons must wear masks at all times inside the venue and outside when in close proximity to others.
