Syracuse, N.Y. -- A welding and fabrication company in Syracuse plans to close in March in a move that will eliminate 62 local jobs.
Specialty Welding & Fabricating of New York Inc. filed a notice with the state under New York’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining (WARN) Act citing “economic” reasons for the closing but providing no specifics.
The company operates from a large building at 1025 East Hiawatha Blvd., at the intersection with Seventh North Street.
Onondaga County property records show the building was sold by Crouse-Hinds Co. to Mic-Ran LLC in 2005 for $1.6 million. On Nov. 9, Mic-Ran sold the property to Morning Flowers LLC for $5.1 million, according to a deed filed with the county clerk’s office. Mic-Ran listed a residential address in East Syracuse.
An employee who answered the phone at the company late Tuesday afternoon said no one was available to comment.
The layoffs will occur around March 1 or “as needed” as the plant shuts down, according to the notice. The company’s 62 workers are not represented by a union.
The company, which has been in business for almost 30 years, provides welding and metal fabricating services, specializing in stainless steel, sheet metal and alloy fabrications, according to its website. Customers include a range of industries, including energy, retail, architectural, agriculture, mining, commercial appliance and food production equipment.
