British oil major BP has promoted Denver-based executive David Lawler to lead the company's U.S. operations.

Lawler will succeed Susan Dio as chairman and president of BP America starting July 1, the company confirmed Thursday.  Currently the CEO of BP's shale arm BPX Energy, Lawler will retain that title but will be splitting his time between Denver and Houston under his new role.

As part of BP's goal to have net zero carbon emissions by 2050, one of Lawler's top tasks will be reducing emissions and eliminating flaring, the industry practice of burning off excess natural gas at oil wells, from the company's shale operations, particularly in the Permian Basin of West Texas.

“Every day the BP America team works to deliver the energy the world needs," Lawler said. "I’m honored to help them do that while also driving our transformation to become a net zero energy company."

Both a center of production and a large consumer market, BP's U.S. operations accounted for more than a third of the global company's $282.6 billion of revenue in 2019.

And with hundreds of thousands of acres of oil leases in Texas, BP is one of the most active drillers in the Lone Star State. The company filed for 342 drilling permits for projects across the state in 2019 and has filed for another 89 so far this year, Railroad Commission of Texas records show.

Lawler’s appointment comes at a time when BP continues responding to the coronavirus pandemic by implementing measures to protect employees, support frontline workers in communities where the company operates and strengthening its finances by cutting its 2020 capital expenditure budget by $3 billion.

"Beyond a track record of delivering strong safety, environmental and commercial results, Dave brings an authentic and inspiring leadership style," BP CEO Bernard Looney said. "His curiosity and willingness to do things differently will be essential as we reinvent BP and reimagine energy for people and our planet."
