DULUTH, MN -- More than two months have gone by with gyms being closed, but Impact Sports training (IST) in Duluth's Lincoln Park neighborhood hasn't missed a beat thanks to modern technology.
Chris Bell, owner and director of performance at the gym, says the classes focus on a variety of things including core, flexibility, body weight, and conditioning.
"Since March 18th, we've been doing online Zoom classes. Three of them a day with our clientele, with our athletes," said Bell.
But there were some training aspects that still needed to be covered.
"Not everyone has access to different implements: dumbells, bars, and other things you would find in a typical gym," Bell added.
Additionally, this has caused athletes to get creative, especially the high school-aged athletes and teams that rely on IST's training during their sports seasons.
"Kids say "hey I've got a bag of dog food," you know 40-pound bag of dog food, we say "good press that over your head 15 times and then hold it for another 30 seconds," added Bell.
Joe Gonrowski, a strength and conditioning coach, says posting these workouts on social media also has helped fill a void.
"A lot of spring athletes they were kind of robbed, maybe isn't the right word but they lost the opportunity to participate in sports. Kids want to be active so this is just another option for them," said Gonrowski.
And as summer approaches, IST has big plans to make sure their athletes are ready for the upcoming fall season.
"We'll still utilize the zoom, the online aspect but then we're going to get outside with small groups. We're looking forward to that and connecting with our folks face to face rather than over the computer," said Bell.
Bell added they will begin hosting 10-person training sessions starting on June 1, with nine athletes and a coach.
He says the workouts will be held outside in accordance with state guidelines.
