COLUMBIANA — A company on the cutting edge of 3-D manufacturing for the foundry industry has won two prestigious leadership awards from the National Association of Manufacturers, the largest manufacturing advocacy group in the U.S.
Humtown Products received the Engineering and Production Technology and Talent Management awards, joining the likes of General Motors, IBM, Merck and Siemens Energy in the categories.
The company announced the awards Tuesday.
“At Humtown, we are the industry’s first to commercialize 3-D printed sand cores and molds,” Brandon Lamoncha, Humtown’s director of additive manufacturing, said. “But we could not have done this alone. Without the support of our partners at America Makes, Youngstown Business Incubator and Youngstown State University, these awards would not be possible. In addition to the partnerships, the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber has been supportive of additive manufacturing on a state and federal level.”
The company was nominated for the awards by a colleague with which it had done business. It serves some of the companies also recognized by the association.
“We had no idea basically the scope or the range of who would be applying for these types of awards and were really shocked to find out who we are in the realms of,” Lamoncha said. “To actually be in the same categories and winning these types of award with them and beside them, we were very, very honored.”
The Engineering and Production Technology leadership award recognizes Humtown’s commercialization of 3-D printing in the metal casting industry, placing the Columbiana-based company among the world leaders in additive manufacturing.
The Talent Management Leadership award recognizes the company’s ways to nurture and develop the next generation of leaders in the manufacturing industry, specifically the company’s visual earnings system.
The VIS is a real-time system that enables production employees to see and monitor their rate of pay in real time, Lamoncha said. It was patented by Lamoncha’s father, Mark, president and CEO of Humtown.
He called it an “empowerment and self-management” system for employees to motivate them to work more efficiently. In return, they receive a higher rate of pay.
David R. Brousell, Manufacturing Leadership Council co-founder, executive director and vice president, said, “At a time when the industry is more innovative and competitive than it ever has been, these award winners truly stand out as leaders of manufacturing’s digital transformation.”
The family-owned company specializes in conventional and 3-D printed sand cores and molds for the foundry industry. It is headquartered in Columbiana and has 100,000 square feet of manufacturing space in Leetonia for its large format printers. The company has five printers, but has room to grow to about 20. Humtown employs about 60 people; 35 on the production side and the rest being engineers and office staff.
Humtown will be recognized Oct. 8 at the Manufacturing Leadership Awards Gala, held virtually.
