DJ LeMahieu was activated from the injured list on Saturday and started at third base after being on the IL since Aug. 16 with a sprained left thumb.
“His body of work speaks for itself. He is one of the best players in the game,’’ manager Aaron Boone said of LeMahieu — who batted leadoff, went 1-for-4 with a triple and made a sensational play to rob J.D. Davis of a hit in the first inning. “He is our catalyst and excited to have him back in the lineup.’’
“I felt good today, it was good to be out there,’’ LeMahieu said after the Yankees’ 2-1 win over the Mets on Saturday at the Stadium. “It’s been a long couple of weeks.’’
LeMahieu injured his thumb on Aug. 15 swinging against the Red Sox.
Less than 24 hours after giving up a game-winning two-run homer to the Mets’ Amed Rosario that cemented a doubleheader loss Friday night, Aroldis Chapman said the Yankees can increase his workload.
When Chapman returned from the COVID-19 injured list on Aug. 17, Boone said back-to-back outings weren’t part of the plan. Chapman made his season debut that night against the Red Sox and waited 11 days for the call to protect a 3-2 lead in the home seventh at Yankee Stadium on Friday night.
A walk to Luis Guillorme was followed by pinch-runner Billy Hamilton swiping second on a pickoff move to first by Chapman. After falling behind, 2-0, to Rosario, Chapman came with a slider and the game ended.
“I am ready to pitch, that has always been my focus. I prepare myself the best I can to be ready to pitch,’’ Chapman said before Saturday’s victory, in which he worked a scoreless ninth. “They want to put me in the game today that is their decision. I will try to prepare myself to be ready to pitch.’’
