Syracuse, N.Y. -- Bankers Healthcare Group in Syracuse is following tech giants Facebook and Google in offering employees working from home during the coronavirus pandemic $1,000 allowances to create home work spaces.

BHG -- which employs 622 people, including 300 at its financial headquarters in Syracuse -- said Friday it will give each of its employees up to $1,000 “to ensure they have a comfortable work space that mimics our offices.”

The money can be spent on technology not already provided by the company to help employees work remotely. They also can use the money to cover the cost of home office furnishings such as desks and chairs and accessories such as plants. They can even spend the money to replicate amenities offered in the company’s offices, including gym equipment and coffee machines.

BHG closed its four offices in Syracuse on March 12 just as the coronavirus pandemic struck the state. The company, which provides loans to healthcare professionals, said Friday that all its employees will work from home until at least the end of 2020.

Google announced in May that it would give employees $1,000 allowances to cover home office equipment costs during the pandemic. On Thursday, Facebook said it will allow employees to work from home until July 2021 because of the pandemic and will give them $1,000 for home office needs.
