TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Trade

The Montreal Impact have acquired forward Mason Toye from Minnesota United in exchange for a total of $600,000 General Allocation Money and a 2021 MLS SuperDraft second round pick.

Montreal expect Toye to be available to debut on Wednesday, October 7 against Columbus Crew SC.

“We are happy with the acquisition of Mason, who fits the profile we wanted, meaning a striker who can score and who has already demonstrated what he’s capable of in this league,” Impact sporting director Olivier Renard said in a club statement. “This addition is also in line with our sporting philosophy of having young players with high potential in the squad.”

Toye, 21, has represented the United States at various youth levels, most recently with the Under-23 side. The forward was selected No. 7 overall by Minnesota United in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft and enjoyed a breakout 2019 season, with six goals and three assists in 820 regular season minutes.

Playing time in 2020 was difficult to come by for the rising forward, with one goal over eight appearances (six starts). The Loons also recently added forward Kei Kamara from the Colorado Rapids and immediately put him in the starting XI for his debut against Columbus Crew SC. Then he started again four days later against Real Salt Lake. Toye was an unused sub in those two games, while forward Luis Amarilla — who has largely started over Toye whenever he's been fit — should be back from his ankle injury soon.

Toye joins the Impact under head coach Thierry Henry. Forwards Romell Quioto and Maxi Urruti have gotten the majority of minutes at striker this season, though both players are versatile and have spent time playing wide during their career.

The Impact face Chicago Fire FC on Saturday (7:30 pm ET | TV & streaming info) as they continue their race to make the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. Montreal sit in 8th place on 14 points in a jumbled Eastern Conference. The top 10 teams make the playoffs in the East. They are currently two points above 11th placed Atlanta United.
