RICHMOND, Va. -- A storm will move into the region on Monday. Rain will spread across Virginia Monday morning and turn heavier.
Steady and heavy rainfall will continue into at least early afternoon. While it will be a chilly rain for us, some wintry weather is possible in far northwestern Virginia near I-81.
Rain will end from west to east later in the day.
Many locations have the potential to pick up an inch or more of rainfall. We will need to monitor river levels the next few days.
Tuesday will be dry and chilly.
Our next storm will impact the region on Wednesday. The exact track isn't 100% locked in, but it favors wintry weather for parts of the state.
Precipitation will move in Wednesday morning into midday.
For eastern and southeastern areas, this event will be rain. Chances for a wintry mix are on the low side.
Closer to the metro, the majority of the system will be rain. However, it may start as a wintry mix before changing over to rain.
Northwest of Richmond, there will likely be a longer period of wintry weather, including some sleet and freezing rain. As warmer air moves in during the day, we may see a complete changeover to rain.
The far northwestern corner of the CBS 6 viewing area will see snow and a wintry mix. A change to rain is possible during the afternoon, but that is not a high chance.
Due to the potential for freezing rain (and some sleet and snow), areas well west of I-95 will have to be monitored. If we see heavy precipitation while temperatures are near or below freezing, ice accumulation may be an issue.
In terms of snowfall, the best chance of seeing accumulation will be areas from west of D.C. down into northwestern and far western Virginia. Extreme northwestern Virginia, from areas like Staunton and Harrisonburg up through Winchester, could see a significant snowfall. This map shows the chance of seeing snowfall accumulation, not the amount of snow.
Since this storm is still hundred of miles away, we will continue to refine the forecast Monday and Tuesday. Any decent shift in the storm track will mean these rain/mix/snow zones may shift a bit west or southeast. The latest forecast can be found here.
