DETROIT – Four Michigan companies are included on Fortune’s 2021 Best Companies to Work For list.

One of the companies, Rocket Companies in Detroit, was ranked No. 5 on the list released on Monday behind only Cisco, Salesforce, Hilton and Wegmans Food Markets Inc.

This marks the 18th consecutive year the holding company consisting of tech-driven real estate, mortgage and eCommerce businesses has ranked in the top 30 on the prestigious list.

“Everything we do is framed by our culture and by our ISMs. Over the past year, we have been guided by the ISM ‘We’ll Figure it Out’ as we navigated the challenges introduced by the pandemic while still creating the best possible experience for our team members,” said Jay Farner, Rocket Companies’ CEO and Vice Chairman.

“When COVID-19 began spreading across the country in the U.S., we rapidly launched measures to promote the health and safety of our team members, clients and communities. Because we took care of our people and made sure they had everything they needed to support our clients, we experienced record growth in 2020 – even as the vast majority of us worked from home.”

Rocket Companies implemented three policies to benefit its employees in 2020 including a paid day off that did not count against team members’ vacation bank, added calendar flexibility and several scheduled breaks throughout the day.

The company also engaged in conversations with team members and community leaders to develop a six-point strategic plan for advancing action on the topics of race, law enforcement engagement, inclusion and more.

Rocket Companies has also been active in supporting its hometown of Detroit by working to prevent eviction and homelessness, supporting the distribution of essential resources and developing the software and infrastructure for the City of Detroit’s COVID-19 testing – and later – vaccine programs.

Rocket Companies transitioned 98 percent of team members to work remotely in early March 2020 and purchased nearly $15 million in equipment over the course of the pandemic to ensure all teams could collaborate in a virtual setting, according to a news release.

According to the survey that determined Fortune’s ranking, 97 percent of team members said they feel good about the ways the organization contributes to the community.

Other companies on the list

Stryker Corporation in Kalamazoo, Plante Moran in Livonia and Dow in Midland were also included on the list at No. 88, No. 91, and No. 99, respectively.

It’s the 23rd consecutive year Plante Moran, a public accounting and business advisory firm, has received the honor.

“Plante Moran was founded on the belief that the whole person comes to work,” Managing Partner Jim Proppe said. “We’re intentional about providing a culture where people come first and where ‘work-life balance’ isn’t just a catchphrase but is embedded in everything we do. This is how we’re able to attract the best professionals in the business and help them stay in the workforce during challenging times.”

This is the first time Dow has made the list. It is one of three manufacturing companies to make the list and is the only materials science company. About 73 percent of U.S. Dow employees said it was a great place to work, according to a news release.

“I’m incredibly proud of this recognition, because it is based on the actions we took and commitments we made, and more importantly reflects what our employees are saying and experiencing in our culture,” said Karen S. Carter, Dow chief human resources officer and chief inclusion officer. “It is a true testament of the hard work and dedication of all of Team Dow.”
