Drexel's athletics programs dominated the leaderboard and smashed records with more than 3,500 donations and $250,000 raised to support student-athlete success during the University's 24 Hours of Impact on May 5.
Accounting for 65 percent of the total donations contributed to the University during the day, athletics' teams took the top seven spots in the standings and finished with 10 of the top 12 overall campus organizations.
Wrestling led the way and finished first in the rankings for the sixth consecutive year with 538 donations. In addition, the team used a creative alumni-supported $25,000 matching gift challenge to raise $57,443 for their program, the most of any team during the day.
Posting its best-ever results, men's rowing (461 donations) and women's rowing (452 donations) finished in second and third place, respectively. Each program won three of the day's challenges and collectively raised over $32,000.
Club ice hockey placed fourth with 368 donations, swimming and diving was fifth (313 donations), men's soccer ranked sixth (287 donations), women's lacrosse was seventh (248 donations), women's soccer was ninth (188 donations) and women's basketball placed 10th (181 donations). Others in the top 20, included field hockey (12th place), general athletics (17th Place) and men's basketball (19th place).
In addition to wrestling and rowing, the teams with the most dollars raised to support their program were women's basketball with $33,008, men's lacrosse with $14,735, men's basketball with $11,377 and men's soccer with $10,630. More than $35,000 was also designated to unrestricted athletics support.
"The energy and enthusiasm of our teams, coaches and Dragons fans everywhere is remarkable. On behalf of all of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, thank you to all of the generous supporters who helped our teams soar and made this year's 24 Hours of Impact a tremendous success," stated Kerry DiBlasio, assistant vice president of development.
Athletics' teams also demonstrated their competitiveness by winning 13 of the day's 14 available challenges which helped secure additional funds for their programs. Men's and women's rowing each captured three challenges, including student donors, parent donors and alumni donors. Women's lacrosse added two challenge wins, as did the Drexel Athletics staff which won a pair of challenges for employee giving. Wrestling, swimming and diving and ice hockey also captured challenge victories. In addition, the top three men's and women's teams in the overall standings received bonus prize money for their programs.
Overall, the Drexel community united in support of student success raising a record $1,122,925 and receiving 5,401 donations. For complete results and to see the final leaderboard, visit drexel.edu/24.
