CHICO — California Regional Theater is offering audiences a sophisticated and honest look at modern adult relationships with the award-winning musical, “Company.”
This musical comedy with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth, was a 1970 production which won record-setting Tony awards.
The awesome musical composed of short vignettes will be performed at CRT’s First Street Theater, 139 W. First St. in downtown Chico on Feb. 4-20.
Producer Bob Maness said “What an honor it is to produce such an amazing show with music written by the beloved legend Steven Sondheim. His recent passing was difficult news for everyone in musical theater, but the opportunity to continue performing his incredible work is a treasure for any cast.”
“This show takes an honest look at modern adult relationships through the eyes of the musical composer, Sondheim,” Maness explained. “It is largely regarded as a trailblazer of the dark-comedy, modern-musical genre and the winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics and Best Book.”
“Company” CRT director Gerald Thomson is assisted by music director Olivia Cerullo and stage manager Terryn Taylor.
Twelve cast members create hilarious moments which are the opposite of solitude and loneliness, It tells of a single man, Robert (Z Hansen), his married friends and several girlfriends.
His friends are all married or engaged couples. It is Robert’s 35th birthday, and the couples have gathered to throw him a surprise party. The couples promise him that his birthday wish will come true, although he claims his friends are all he needs (Company).
What follows are a series of disconnected vignettes in which Robert visits with his friends. When his friends urge him to take on a spouse, he is forced to question his bachelorhood.
