Text-Em-All is a new software company that’s old at heart.
Founded in 2005, the Frisco-based company has grown from a handful of employees to more than 40—with half of that growth occurring over the last two years. They’ve been recognized as a great place to work by Forbes & Inc. magazines, the Dallas Business Journal, and several others. But one characteristic separates the company from others in the start-up or technology sphere: its owners don’t plan to sell. In fact, they actively work to create and provide benefits for employees in an effort to create a self-sustaining company that is around for 100 years—a stark contrast from the majority of workplaces.
“We said, ‘Let’s start the kind of company that’s going to be the kind of place we want to work forever,’” President and Founder Brad Herrmann said of the company’s origins. “Let’s build what we want and keep it that way. That makes us very unusual.”
Text-Em-All is Frisco home-grown and started out in Hall Office Park, eventually moving to a building across the Dallas North Tollway from The Star. Company leaders are now considering expanding further to a building next door to accommodate future growth.
The company’s tremendous revenue and employee growth also translates to more benefits for the staff. For example, Hermann and co-founder Hai Nguyen are integrating an employee ownership model, which allows employees to become owners in the company.
This benefit will mean that employees are granted ownership in the company for their future retirement, and will be able to purchase stock in the company to build wealth. This is in addition to Text-Em-All’s quarterly profit sharing, which can amount to upwards of $25,000 annually for some employees, and another annual profit sharing award.
“We never want to sell out, so by selling the company to employees we can ensure that the company's legacy is protected long-term,” Head of Marketing Ron Kinkade said. “We believe that a purpose driven company can be profitable and put people first, all while staying privately held.”
The company’s benefits package also includes unlimited time off for all employees; a flexible, hybrid work model; and opportunities to volunteer and donate company dollars each quarter to charity.
Company growth also means an opportunity for existing employees to take on new roles. For example, software engineer Jason Thomas originally started out on Text-Em-All’s customer service team. Thomas communicated his desire of becoming an engineer to the leadership team, and the company paid for him to take classes at Southern Methodist University and ensured he spent time learning from other engineers on the team.
When another engineer left the company after 10 years, it gave Jason an opportunity to fill the role.
“Jason totally stepped up and we didn’t miss a beat,” Herrmann said. “It was a big success story.”
More opportunities to join the team at Text-Em-All are available: the company is currently hiring for several software engineers and an account manager position.
“This is a really special place to work,” Kinkade said. “Leadership actually cares about you as an individual, both personally and professionally. That—and knowing that everyone I work with is united in our purpose to have a positive impact—inspires me to do my best every day.”
