Patti LuPone isn't looking for the company of anti-maskers.

During a post-performance chat with the Company cast following a Tuesday evening show, the Tony-winning actress engaged in a brief but booming Broadway altercation with a member of the audience who LuPone called out for not properly wearing their mask.

“Put your mask over your nose!" the Company star can be heard shouting in a 36-second video captured by an audience member who later shared the recording on Twitter. "That's why you're in the theater. That is the rule. If you don't want to follow the rule get the fuck out!”

As the theater erupted in applause and cheers, LuPone continued on. “Who do you think you are if don't respect the people sitting around you?”

The theater-goer, clearly angered, then replied to the actress, “I pay your salary."

To which, LuPone quickly called “bullshit."

"You pay my salary? Bullshit. Chris Harper pays my salary,” Lupone said of the Elliot & Harper producer responsible for bringing the Company revival back to the Broadway stage. “Who do you think you are? Just put your mask over your nose.”

LuPone's off-script message for the anti-masker audience member comes two months after her grand return to the stage following a bout with COVID-19. The lauded actor tested positive for the virus at the end of February and took a week break from the stage.

The Company star returned to the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in March but was faced with another challenge when a bouquet of long-stemmed roses that were thrown on stage accidentally hit her head during the curtain call.

Thankfully, her co-star Claybourne Elder managed to capture the hilarious moment on video, sharing it on his Instagram account. He wrote in the caption, “Hit in the head with roses. This is the moment a fan did what we all want to do at the end of Ladies Who Lunch: throw roses at Patti LuPone's head in adoration.” The actress was also a good sport about the accident, looking around in bafflement before laughing off the moment.

Plus, LuPone and her Company cast have many reasons to be cheerful. On Monday, the Stephen Sondheim revival scored nine 2022 Tony nominations, including best revival of a musical and best performance by an actress in a featured role in a musical for LuPone.
