The Boy Scouts of America have filed for bankruptcy, but leaders of the Jayhawk Council's Sojadi District don't expect any impact on how they operate.
District Chair Jim Wayman spoke with KVOE News shortly after BSA announced its Chapter 11 filing before sunrise Tuesday.
The BSA itself said the filing, which follows thousands of sexual abuse accusations or lawsuits that date back to the 1940s, will not impact local Scouting councils because they are legally separate from the national organization.
Court testimony from last year indicated nearly 8,000 Scouts may have been abused. Wayman says there have been no such issues in the Sojadi District to his knowledge, and he says interaction policies between adults and youths are now among the strictest in the nation.
Wayman, who has been involved in Scouting since he was a child, says the local operation is doing well.

5 am Tuesday: Boy Scouts of America files for bankruptcy
The Boy Scouts of America are broke.
In a news release announced early Tuesday morning, Boy Scouts of America has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the wake of thousands of sexual abuse accusations or lawsuits that date back to the 1940s in some cases. The filing essentially puts those lawsuits on hold while the case works through bankruptcy court.
CNN says court testimony exposed last April indicates more than 12,000 children may have been sexually abused by as many as 7,800 former leaders.
BSA says the filing is designed to compensate victims through the creation of a Victims Compensation Trust and continue carrying out the Scouting mission. It has also started a partnership with 1in6, a national organization helping male survivors of sexual abuse. BSA says it "intends to maintain its commitments" to members, families, volunteer leaders, employees, retirees, donors, alumni, vendors and outside partners as the bankruptcy process unfolds.
Boy Scouts of America says the bankruptcy filing does not impact local Scouting councils because they are legally separate and distinct organizations.
Boy Scouts just celebrated its 110th anniversary earlier this month. It has about 2.2 million youths and young adults between ages 5 and 21. Click here for a link to the BSA news release, including links to information about youth protection policies and an open letter to victims.
