Hawk Mountain BSA: Bankruptcy to have no local impact - WFMZ Allentown

ONTELAUNEE TWP., Pa. - As Boy Scouts of America files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the organization that oversees scouting programs in Berks and Schuylkill counties said the move will have no impact locally.

The Boy Scouts' Hawk Mountain Council, headquartered in Ontelaunee Township, is "legally separate, distinct and financially independent from the national organization," Jim Milham Jr., the council's scout executive and CEO said in a statement to 69 News on Tuesday.

Milham added that unit meetings and activities, district and council events, and other scouting-related adventures and projects will continue to take place as usual.

"In short, there will be no changes to the local Scouting experience," he said.

Milham said contributions from supporters have put the Hawk Mountain Council on a path to serving local youth and their families for generations to come.

"Now more than ever, your generous and ongoing support remains critical to delivering the mission of Scouting in our community," Milham said.

The national organization echoed the local sentiment in a statement of its own on Tuesday, after filing for bankruptcy for protection.

"Scouting programs will continue throughout this process and for many years to come," the Boy Scouts said. "Local councils are not filing for bankruptcy because they are legally separate and distinct organizations."

Boy Scouts of America filed for Chapter 11 in an attempt to work out a potentially mammoth compensation plan for victims of sex-abuse and put their lawsuits on hold.

Scores of attorneys are seeking settlements on behalf of several thousand men who say they were molested as scouts by scoutmasters or other leaders decades ago.

Bankruptcy will enable the BSA to put those lawsuits on hold for now, but the 110-year-old organization could ultimately be forced to sell off some of its vast property holdings, including campgrounds and hiking trails, to raise money for a compensation trust fund that could surpass $1 billion.

The petition filed in federal bankruptcy court in Wilmington, Delaware, listed the Boy Scouts' assets at between $1 billion and $10 billion, and its liabilities at $500 million to $1 billion.

The national organization has established a special website dedicated to its restructuring process.
