COVID-19's impact on tourism in Greenbrier County - WVVA TV

(WVVA) Welcoming visitors is out of the question right now with stay at home orders issued across the country. This means Greenbrier County businesses that rely on tourists to stay profitable are suffering.

Greenbrier County Commission President Lowell Rose spoke to WVVA on Friday about how COVID-19 is impacting tourism in Greenbrier County, how local businesses are reacting to, plans to reopen the county and more.

"It's been kind of devastating to our local economy as far as our visitors," said Rose. "...Greenbrier County has about $213 million a year, money that comes from visitors."

Greenbrier County was on track to have a great year, up until February, based on numbers from the hotel/motel taxes, according to Rose. However, The Greenbrier, the biggest hotel in the area, has been shut down for weeks and this has also impacted the local economy.

"A lot of people in the county would love to get back to work and the shops would like to be open, but we know they're not there yet," said Rose. "The Greenbrier County Health Dept. is really in control of them, between them and the Governor, to let us open up. We're ready to open up...we'll wait until the Governor..and the state DHHR give us the green light."
