When head coach Jimbo Fisher came to Texas A&M prior to the 2018 season, the talent level as a whole on the roster was down a bit. However, he did inherit some very good individual players.
One of those was defensive tackle Justin Madubuike. As a redshirt freshman the year before Fisher arrived, Madubuike was a key backup in the rotation after having moved over from defensive end, a position at which he was selected as an Army All-American out of high school.
The first year under Fisher, Madubuike had double-digit tackles for loss from his tackle spot while also recording 5.5 sacks. He repeated that feat as a fourth-year junior this past season before declaring a year early for the NFL Draft.
On Friday evening, Madubuike heard his named called with the No. 71 overall pick when he was selected by the Baltimore Ravens. Fisher thinks the Aggie defender will have a big impact at the next level.
"Justin was a great player to coach as how he affected the game. Not many inside guys can have a great pass rush. Justin is unbelievably physical," Fisher said of the newest Raven.
One of the reasons Madubuike was not picked even earlier what the teams were a bit concerned about his size. However, Fisher does not understand those concerns.
"People think of him and ask me, 'Is he undersized?' He plays around 300 pounds consistently," Fisher said. "Justin is so physical, so twitchy, so strong and I say, at times, violent. He has the ability to create so much leverage with his athleticism. He can bend. He can run. But his strength and being able to handle guys much larger than him, with his athleticism and power, is amazing. But then he has great pass-rush skills inside, who you can even move outside."
Fisher sees the potential there for Madubuike to have a similar role as one of the top defenders in the NFL.
"I think he'll have a great pro career for two (reasons). One, he can play the run. He's a three-down player. And, more importantly, the way he can rush the passer for interior guys. That's where it's going to, the Aaron Donalds of the world. I'm not saying he's Aaron Donald; I'm not saying he can't be Aaron Donald. But those guys inside that have that twitch and athleticism but still can play the run with power and leverage is amazing."
And, though he spent four years in Aggieland, Madubuike is still growing as a player, according to Fisher.
"I think he's just now scratching the surface of how good he can be and I think he's got a chance to be an ever better pro than he was a college player," the coach said. "And he was one heck of a football player for us."
