In the three days since reaching 2,002 cases on May 7, Travis County has reported 125 new cases.
While this weekend was the first during the pandemic to allow services such as barbershops and salons to operate in Austin, the city of Austin has extended its stay at home order. Mayor Steve Adler said May 8 he believes that the decision to have the state and cities “dip our toe” into reopening will, "by definition," result in a second surge in infections, as person-to-person interactions will increase.
Adler and Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt said they are already working with the local chamber of commerce to plan for a second surge and for a potential second lockdown of local commerce.
