Buoy Beer building collapses in Astoria; company reports no injuries - OregonLive

A structural failure at Buoy Beer’s original building in Astoria caused a large portion of the roof to collapse early Tuesday night, but the company said no one was injured.

A photo Buoy posted to Instagram shows the roof caved in on the north-central side of the building, an area that includes the kitchen, the west end of the brewery’s restaurant as well as storage space.

In the social media post, Buoy said, “We are safe. Thanks to everyone reaching out.”

Jessyka Dart-Mclean, Buoy’s marketing manager, said in reply to an inquiry from The Oregonian/OregonLive that the company had no comment and was “still assessing the situation.”

Dart-Mclean on Tuesday told The Daily Astorian that the collapsed area had previously been closed.

“The Columbia River waters shift, and that’s what we were battling against in that area,” she told the newspaper.

City Manager Brett Estes said authorities are assessing the structure’s stability, The Associated Press reported. The brewery and restaurant will be closed indefinitely, the AP said.

Neither Buoy nor city officials have said what caused the collapse.

The building, at 1 Eighth St., is a century-old former cannery built on a dock near the mouth of the Columbia River. It had been abandoned and grown decrepit before Buoy bought and refurbished it after the brewery’s 2013 founding.

Buoy shored it up and built a brewery, restaurant and taproom, including the popular restaurant floor window that allows patrons to watch the sea lions lounging just feet below on a deck built for viewing. But issues with the dock pilings forced the company to take precautionary measures last year, The Astorian reported.

Buoy has been expanding in recent years and has bought other adjacent buildings, creating a vibrant area that has become popular with tourists. Buoy’s ownership team is creating a new production facility and spacious taproom for Pilot House Distilling, which it bought in 2019. And a former sardine processing building directly east of Buoy has new life as the Bowline Hotel after being renovated by Adrift Hotel Co. of Long Beach, Washington.

Buoy also acquired a large building directly south of the original building and last summer opened a large production brewery, moving its main brewing operation out of the original building. In addition to the restaurant and taproom, the original building now houses the brewery’s lager storage, canning line and packaging operations.

It was unclear if any of those operations were affected by the collapse or if it would alter Buoy’s production capabilities.
