Dead & Company Resume Summer Tour Outside of Washington, D.C.
Last night Dead & Company resumed their summer tour at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Va. The show marked the first since they abruptly canceled a performance set for Wednesday, July 6, at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., after John Mayer’s father had to be hospitalized for an emergency operation.
Dead & Company’s righteously politically charged and cover-heavy show kicked off with “Man Smart, Woman Smarter,” which was followed by “New Speedway Boogie.” They continued with the heavy yet empathetic tone with a cover of Lemore James’ “It Hurts Me Too,” showcasing Mayer’s blues roots. Next Dead & Company performed the tour debut of “Peggy-O” before following with “Cold Rain and Snow.” The set’s penultimate pairing came in the form of “China Doll” and Weir’s deeply appropriate and ever-pertinent “Throwing Stones.” They closed the first set with the dynamic and connective “Don’t Ease Me in.”
Dead and Company returned to the stage and opened their second set with “Sugaree,” and continued the non-stop melange of Grateful Dead classics flowing into “Playing in the Band” then “Uncle John’s Band” before melding “Lady With A Fan” and the seminal “Terrapin Station.” Jay Lane–who once again was sitting in for Bill Kreutzman–and Mickey Hart, rolled through “Drums” before “Space” and kept the rhythm flowing as the ensemble tackled traditional “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad.” After returning to “Playing in the Band,” Weir led the group through “Stella Blue” and a cover of ‘Bobby Blue’ Bland’s “Turn on Your Lovelight, to bring the set to a close.
After applause and a short break, the band returned to the stage for an encore which saw Mayer taking the reins on the 1987 track “Black Muddy River” – Dead and Company played the descriptive song loudly, perhaps in hopes the swamp around the bend may find its other side.
Dead & Company’s tour continues on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pa.
