BELLAIRE — Bellaire Mayor Edward Marling recently announced a potential rental contract between the village and Navarro Trucking for a piece of property that would be utilized as a transfer station for the business.
Marling opened Thursday’s Bellaire Village Council meeting with an announcement regarding the company’s interest in renting a piece of property from the village.
He said he recently was contacted by the company based in Bristol, Connecticut, after its representatives drove through the area and saw the former St. John football field property.
“We met with the owner and another fellow. They were going down south on (Ohio) 7 and they happened to look over and saw the sign that was on the building,” he said, adding that they contacted him and met up so he could show them the grounds.
Marling said he informed the company owner that the village wants $4,000 per month for the nearly 4.5-acre piece of land. He said the company plans to utilize the property for the next five years as a transfer station.
Solicitor Michael Shaheen said he spoke to the company co-owners, Diego Navarro and Diego Adaro. He said he has contract terms that he needs to discuss with council in an executive session.
“For the lack of a better term, I believe it’s real and they really want to do it. They’re interested in making a commitment in your village,” he told members of council. “There’s just some specifics we need to discuss and some potential contractual issues that I think are appropriate to discuss in executive session, if that’s OK.”
Marling said he was informed that the company plans to utilize that property for around 100 drivers who will be in and out of the area, as well as for eight to 10 permanent positions including mechanics, dispatchers and security guards. Additionally, he said they are looking for more property that they can purchase in order to provide lodging for truckers. He said the company’s owners have shown interest in the former school in West Bellaire.
“They’d like to convert it and make small apartments so the truckers staying overnight, instead of them having to sleep in their truck, (they) can go there and stay,” he said.
Marling said he feels the possible contract with the company would be beneficial for the village. He said local restaurants would most likely receive more customers with the truck drivers coming through.
“We’re looking at a ripple effect. … When they came and talked to me, I thought it was a great idea,” he said.
Shaheen is working to put together the contract. Marling said once that is complete, council will review it and vote on it prior to moving forward.
Shaheen later called for an executive session to discuss litigation, contractural pieces and personnel. Once members came out of the closed-door session, no further action was taken.
Council will next meet at 6 p.m. July 21 at the municipal building, located at 3197 Belmont St.
