SOLON, OHIO — South Korean company Cosmax USA will close its factory and offices in Solon seven years after their grand opening.
When the factory opened in January 2015 it was the company’s first American factory, opening in what used to be a L’Oreal shampoo factory on at 30701 Carter St. in Solon. The closing will lead to 122 workers losing their jobs, according to a state filing.
The factory will start eliminating positions on Sept. 30 and will do so each week until Jan. 31, when the plant will be completely closed. Cosmax USA detailed the closing in a letter to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Companies are required to inform state and local governments about mass layoffs when they meet certain criteria.
A cleveland.com reporter has reached out to Cosmax USA for comment.
Sok-Min Yu, chief executive of Cosmax USA when the factory opened, said in 2015 that the company invested $28 million to convert and transform the 330,000-square-foot former shampoo factory into a state-of-the-art facility especially equipped to produce lipstick, foundation, eye shadow, blush and moisturizer.
Cosmax is an original design manufacturer that develops and produces beauty products for other companies, which then sell them under different brand names.
The company also has a research center in New Jersey, but had no other U.S.-based factories.
