It's the "When it finally happens," city and county leaders have been talking about. Coronavirus is now in Monroe County forcing the cancellation of large gathering events.
Rochester Running Company CEO Jonathan Griffiths says, The 22nd Annual Running of The Green scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed until next year.
"This morning at 8:30 I got a call from the City, and they said that they're cancelling all our large events, and the parade," Griffiths said.
Under the circumstances, Griffiths says cancelling the race that had 1,700 participants this year out of precaution is understandable. His company, just like many others is taking a big financial hit. Race shirts for the runners alone cost him around $10,000.
"We've already kind of spent the money for the race. You know we already made the preparations. We've had everybody in line, volunteers, sponsors. So it takes a huge hit," Griffiths said.
The ban on large gatherings also trickles down to other businesses.
"It's not always like the big events gets cancelled," Griffiths said. He continued, "But there's a lot of other things that happen that people don't see."
Rochester's single biggest event of the year is the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. Its cancellation will also have a big impact said Parade Committee Spokesperson Chris Shalvoy.
"The business owners along the parade route will definitely be affected by, and that's something we feel bad about for the community especially those business owners that support the parade," Shalvoy said.
One of the very few events that will continue throughout this weekend is Gardenscape at The Dome.
