The economic impact of three Coastal Bend military bases on the Texas state economy in 2019 rings in at $5.4 billion, according to the results of a study by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Naval Air Stations Corpus Christi and Kingsville and the Corpus Christi Army Depot also jointly account for 30,843 jobs, both directly and indirectly. Overall, the state’s 15 military bases contributed at least $123.6 billion to the economy and supported more than 640,000 jobs.
The results of the study, which was done at the request of the Texas Military Preparedness Commission, were released by Gov. Greg Abbott on June 22.
“Now more than ever, these jobs add critical stability for communities focused on economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic,” Abbott said in a statement. “That is why I will continue to work with the Texas Legislature and TMPC to ensure that military installations in Texas keep adding unmatched value for our nation.”
The economic impact of the Corpus Christi Army Depot accounts for 2,342 direct and indirect jobs. The economic output was counted at $359.2 million.
Naval Air Station Corpus Christi accounts for 15,261 direct and indirect jobs with an economic impact of $2.8 million.
For Naval Air Station Kingsville, the numbers are 4,695 jobs and $852 million.
The comptroller’s study is an analysis of the population and employees directly affiliated with the military installations in Texas, including active duty, visiting and other military personnel, dependents, civilian employees, and contractors affiliated with the base.
The commission, which works within the office of the governor, advises elected officials on defense and military issues to strengthen the position of state military installations to be prepared for future Base Realignment and Closure hearings. The commission’s 13 members serve six-year staggered terms.
Members typically represent an installation in their community. Garry Bradford serves on the commission representing the three bases in the Corpus Christi area.
Bradford was appointed by the governor in January and is the owner, president, and CEO of Unique Employment Service and Bradford Holding Company. Among other positions, he served on the Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development board of Directors.
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar called Texas military bases vital to national defense and the state’s economy.
“In most cases, these bases and the men and women who work there are the lifeblood of their communities – supporting local businesses, buying homes, and creating the fabric of their neighborhoods,” Hegar said. “But the economic impact can be felt by every Texan and supports jobs in a wide variety of industries and sectors of the state economy.”
