RICHMOND, Va. -- A winter storm will impact the state on Sunday.
Some light snow will move in from the west Saturday night. This initial batch of precipitation will be fighting some dry air, so it may take a while before the flakes reach the ground.
Chances for snow will increase Sunday morning, especially after daybreak. Snow will turn steadier for mid and late morning.
As some warmer air moves in from the south, the snow will transition to a wintry mix of sleet (ice pellets) and freezing rain (falls as liquid rain and then freezes into ice after it hits the ground).
The wintry mix should push north of I-64 during the afternoon. As it continues to warm up, the precipitation will become just plain rain for the metro and points south.
The rain could make it up into northern Virginia, but it would be late in the day.
The precipitation will turn more scattered by Sunday night.
Far southern and southeastern Virginia will see the least amount of snow. Far northern and northwestern Virginia will stay snow or a mix.
Accumulations are quite difficult and will be based on the exact times the snow switches to a mix and then rain. We should get at least an inch or two of snow in the metro, but there is the potential for around 4 inches if the switch to rain holds off.
Areas north and west of Richmond will likely see 4 or more inches of snow. There will be pockets of 6 to 8 inch amounts possible farther northwest.
Winter storm warnings are in effect Saturday night and Sunday for many areas, including Richmond. A winter weather advisory covers all other areas in eastern and southeastern Virginia.
Sleet and freezing rain will cause an icy glaze on top of the snow in some locations. The chances for this are higher for areas west of I-95 and south of I-64.
The changeover to rain will cause some of the ice and snow accumulations to get washed away. We will have some scattered rain and snow showers around on Monday, especially north of I-64. Any additional accumulations would be minor.
